A genuine gold buyer will always ask for a few documents before buying your gold. This is not extra paperwork — it protects you, and it is what the rules expect from a gold business.
The documents to carry
1. Aadhaar card (original). Confirms your identity and address. Your number is recorded for KYC and kept private.
2. PAN card (original). PAN is required for higher-value transactions, and many buyers ask for it on every purchase so the records are complete.
3. Bank passbook or a cancelled cheque. So that the money can be transferred straight to your own account. Make sure the account is in your name.
4. The original purchase bill (if you have it). Not compulsory, but it shows where the jewellery was bought and its purity at the time. Some buyers, including VRGOLD, may give a small bonus when you bring it.
Can I sell gold without a bill?
Yes. Most old family jewellery has no bill. Your Aadhaar and PAN are enough for KYC.
Why KYC protects the seller
- You get a proper record and a numbered receipt of what you sold.
- The money goes to your own bank account, with a transaction reference.
- It keeps stolen gold out of the market, so honest sellers are not mixed up with it.
About cash payments
Indian law does not allow anyone to receive ₹2,00,000 or more in cash in a single transaction. For larger amounts the payment must be made through the bank — which is safer for you anyway.
