When you take jewellery to a gold buyer, the valuation follows a few clear steps. Knowing them helps you follow along and ask the right questions.
1. Gross weight
Each ornament is weighed on a calibrated electronic scale. This is the gross weight — everything together.
2. Stone and bead deduction
Stones, pearls, beads, enamel fillings, lac and threads are not gold. Their weight is estimated or removed and deducted, giving the net weight. Ask the buyer to tell you the stone weight for each piece.
3. Purity test
The purity is tested — at VRGOLD with modern equipment, in front of you. The result is shown as a percentage, for example 91.6 for 22K. (Read more in how gold purity is tested.)
4. Fine gold
Fine gold = net weight × purity. This is the actual amount of pure gold in your jewellery.
5. Rate and value
Value = fine gold × the buyer's 24K rate per gram. At VRGOLD the rate is published on our gold rate page, next to the live market rate.
6. Charges and the final amount
Any service charge or other deduction should be listed separately, and the net amount shown before you agree.
Why you do not get back what you paid at the shop
When you bought the jewellery, the price included making charges (often 8–20% or more), wastage and 3% GST. These are the cost of making and selling the jewellery, not gold — so a buyer pays only for the gold content. That is the main reason the selling value is lower than the purchase bill.
