When you need money, your gold can help in two ways: pledge it for a gold loan, or sell it. Both are useful — the right choice depends on your situation.
How a gold loan works
A bank, NBFC or private lender gives you a loan against your gold, usually a percentage of its value. You pay interest and get your gold back when you repay.
A gold loan makes sense when:
- you need money for a short time and are sure you can repay;
- the jewellery has sentimental value and you want to keep it.
Watch out for:
- Interest adds up month after month, especially with private lenders.
- If you cannot repay, the lender may auction your gold, often below its market value.
- Renewals and penalties can make a small loan expensive.
How selling works
You sell the gold at today's rate and receive the full value, with no repayments.
Selling makes sense when:
- you do not plan to wear the jewellery again (old, broken or unused pieces);
- you want to clear a debt completely;
- your gold loan interest is growing faster than you can repay.
A simple comparison
Say your gold is worth ₹2,00,000 and you need ₹1,40,000 for a year:
- Gold loan: you receive ₹1,40,000, pay a year of interest, and must repay ₹1,40,000 plus interest to get the gold back.
- Selling: you receive about ₹2,00,000 (after any deductions), use what you need and keep the rest — but the jewellery is gone.
